Antonietta Raphaël. Attraverso lo specchio

The artwork Riflesso nello specchio (1945 -1961) by Antonietta Raphaël (1895 - 1975), from the permanent collection of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Rome (inv. 2985), is part of the exhibition Antonietta Raphaël. Attraverso lo specchio.
The exhibition takes a deep and personal approach to one of the most important artists from the Roman School, displaying Raphaël's paintings, sculptures and works on paper, accompanied by documents, family photographs, letters and diary pages. A selection of works by the painter and life partner Mario Mafai, together with a previously unseen video documentary made for the exhibition, also enriches the exhibition. The subtitle Attraverso lo specchio (Through the Looking Glass) alludes to Mafai's aptitude to transform artistic practice into a tool for investigating her inner self and female identity. The mirror, as self-representation and doubling, is therefore the common thread running through the exhibition.
