La bilancia e la spada. Storie di giustizia a Castel Sant'Angelo
Exhibition curated by Mariastella Margozzi with the collaboration of Vincenzo Lemmo, Michele Occhioni, Laura Salerno.
The large painting Ritorno da Mentana, oil on canvas dated 1872 by Onorato Carlandi, from the collection of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna (inv. AM 4599), is included in the exhibition La bilancia e la spada. Storie di giustizia a Castel Sant'Angelo, which illustrates the concept of justice in Rome from the 15th to the 19th century. Through the evocation of the characters who in various ways were part of the history of the Castel Sant'Angelo fortress, for a long time a place of imprisonment and trials, the exhibition traces the political events of the city in the modern age, up to the proclamation of the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. Carlandi's canvas illustrates with great realism Garibaldi's defeat by the Papal and French troops near Mentana on 3 November 1867.
